TORONTO, Ontario, May 18, 2020 – Aiming to redefine the segment, the fourth-generation Toyota Sienna is reinventing the minivan to adapt it to a wider range of people and activities. Now equipped with an exclusively hybrid powertrain on all versions and a range of new technologies and new layouts, the Toyota Sienna 2021 raises the bar in style, safety, comfort, versatility and fuel efficiency in its segment.
Designed, manufactured and assembled in North America, the exclusively hybrid Sienna 2021 is inspired by the daring and robust character of SUVs and offers many high-end features as an option: sliding side doors and foot-activated assisted tailgate, control system four-zone climate control, heated long-slide captain’s seats with second row legrests, on-board vacuum and refrigerator, power tilt and telescopic steering column (first in segment), heated steering wheel, mirror indoor digital display, 10-inch color head-up display, and premium 12-speaker JBL® audio system.
The Toyota Sienna 2021 is also ready for outdoor adventures with optional all-wheel drive. It is also ready to accommodate accessories, such as a roof rack, cross bars, bicycle rack and more. The Sienna will also offer an optional 1,500-watt towing hitch and inverter with a 120 VAC outlet to power camping equipment.
In addition, all versions of the Sienna 2021 have the capacity to tow up to 3,500 lbs, which is enough to tow a well-equipped compact touring caravan, or simply to transport your bikes for a weekend getaway.
The Sienna: completely redesigned from A to Z
Designed by CALTY studios in Newport Beach, California, and Ann Arbor, Michigan, the fourth generation Sienna offers a combination of space, comfort, convenience, energy efficiency and versatility that other types of vehicles cannot match. Starting with a brand new structure based on the TNGA-K platform, the objective was to optimize all the qualities associated with a minivan, while wrapping it all up in a bold, attractive and provocative body, by widening the definition even the next generation van.
“It’s a brand new vehicle from start to finish, with a new structural platform as well as a new electric platform,” said chief engineer Monte Kaehr. “Developing the fourth generation Sienna was a huge challenge, but we were all united around a common goal: to make the best van ever. ”
This daring and innovative approach allowed designers to reinforce the proportions in order to better emphasize the shoulder line and favor wheel flares which express the sportiness of the vehicle. The surface of the body is boldly sculpted, which contrasts with the typical square-shaped minivans that crisscross our roads today.
The design of the front part was inspired by the iconic Japanese high-speed train Shinkansen so that its appearance gives off a feeling of elegance, speed and confidence. The headlights are mounted high and extend on the sides as if they were shaped by the wind. The bold lower grille is enhanced by slim, high-tech LED fog lights, pushed to the corners, which enhances the vehicle’s stable, well-positioned posture.
In order to optimize the interior space while avoiding a square design, the rear part of the cabin is fitted with an upright that is dynamically tilted forward. The rear lights harmoniously extend from the sculpted bodywork to the rear and use thin LED light strips to create a unique light signature. The integrated black tail light flap is not only an aesthetic touch, it also helps to improve aerodynamic performance. The deeply sculpted tailgate, with a neat appearance, has an integrated fin, made possible by a molded resin process.
The ultra sporty XSE model takes excitement, sporting qualities and driving experience to a level never seen before in the minivan segment. With 20-inch dark wheels with 5 divided spokes and dynamic front and rear bumpers specific to the XSE FWD version, this model seems to have been born on a race track.
Bold design paired with a spacious interior
Toyota had called the third-generation Sienna “family-friendly, but the 2021 goes even further.
The design team noticed that today’s customers don’t want to feel like they are driving a bus, and thought carefully about how to combine the practical attributes of a minivan with the desire to experience more personalized driving.
Confidence, refinement and intelligent innovation … these are the key terms used to redefine the experience associated with minivans. With this in mind, the designers have created a modern dashboard, composed of bold horizontal layers that give the interior a feeling of airy space, with a large central touch screen, practical storage capacity and the console. with innovative bridge, essential for personalizing the driver and front passenger space.
The bridge console is an innovative solution that breaks with the usual configuration of a minivan. The ergonomic bridge is positioned high between the driver and the passenger to facilitate its use, and elegantly connects the dashboard to the central armrest. This unique feature allows the driver to enjoy a more comfortable and stress-free driving experience. The gear lever and necessary functions are all within easy reach, as are the cup holders, the optional wireless charger and the numerous storage bins for small items. Below the deck is a large open area for convenient storage of large personal items, such as a handbag.
To further enhance interior space, the optional second-row super-long sliding master seats move 25 inches, providing unprecedented legroom and flexibility to maximize comfort, especially when used with the optional legrest. Even tall adults can relax in comfort. With all the features and the best seats in the segment, all rows combined!
The Sienna LE models and some XLE models are available in an 8-seat configuration with two captain’s seats, a second long-sliding row and a fold-down central seat. Certain XLE models, as well as the XSE, Limited and Platinum models, are 7-seater models fitted with second-row captain’s seats with super-long sliding, the Limited model being equipped in addition with legrests.
With smart solutions and first-class comfort all over the cabin, the new Sienna is the most sophisticated, versatile and enjoyable ever.
In addition to the exemplary collision protection provided by the TNGA-K platform, the Sienna 2021 includes a second generation Toyota Safety Sense (TSS 2.0) as standard, a full suite of active safety features that include the following:
- the pre-collision system with detection of pedestrians during the day and in low light conditions and detection of cyclists during the day;
- dynamic radar cruise control with full speed range;
- the lane departure warning system with lane keeping assist;
- automatic high beams.
The pre-collision system with pedestrian detection function provides automatic emergency braking in cases where the driver does not react quickly enough to an emergency situation. The pre-collision system not only detects vehicles in front of you, it can also detect a cyclist and even a pedestrian in low light conditions. The blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert is also standard on all Sienna models.
The Sienna 2021 is equipped with 10 airbags: driver and passenger front airbags; driver’s knee airbag; an airbag in the passenger seat cushion; side cushions mounted in the front seats; side cushions in the rear side seats; and curtain side airbags in the three rows of seats. Toyota’s Star Safety System includes the vehicle’s stability control system, traction control, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, anti-lock brake system and smart stop technology.
Toyota takes safety a step further with features like the rear seatbelt reminder and electric parking brake, as well as a new feature called the rear passenger recall. Designed for family safety, rear occupant detection is based on door sequencing logic, which displays a warning message on the multifunction screen of the instrument cluster, inviting the driver to check for the presence of passengers or rear loading.
So that the Sienna driver can confidently compete with other SUVs on the road, a natural and intuitive link is created between this SUV and his vehicle thanks to the optimized geometry made possible by the TNGA-K platform. , combined with a multi-rod, swingarm suspension as well as the increased rigidity of the bodywork.
A quiet place to make noise
Like all Toyota vehicles built on the new TNGA-K platform, the Sienna 2021 benefits from a multitude of measures that aim to make the passenger compartment almost as quiet and silent as a library. Toyota engineers have worked to reduce noise in the frequencies where conversations are taking place.
The high-resistance TNGA-K platform protects against intrusion of noise, and reduces vibrations in the steering, floor and structure. Thick soundproofing and insulation materials judiciously placed throughout the body help prevent outside noise from entering the interior.
Of course, thanks to the on-board connectivity offered by the Sienna (7 USB ports, high-end JBL 12-speaker audio system with optional 1200 watt amplifier and 1080p high-definition rear entertainment system), conversations are just one of the aspects that benefit from the silence of the interior.
If the interior noise level should increase, for example due to a small altercation between certain young passengers, the optional Driver Easy Speak system is the driver’s best friend. Introduced on the third generation Sienna, this feature allows the driver to speak directly to the rear passengers through the rear speakers of the audio system.
In short, the Sienna offers all the luxury of a large SUV, but with room for a family, 7 USB ports and up to 18 cup holders.
Seeing the invisible
The Sienna has always offered a wide and high view of the road which gives the driver a feeling of confidence behind the wheel. With its elevated driving position and large glass surfaces, the Sienna is an ideal vehicle to admire the scenery, while the privacy glass behind the first row gives rear passengers a little discretion.
Over the years, the Sienna has used technology to improve its excellent visibility and outward lines of vision to allow the driver to better see what is going on behind and around the vehicle. The 2021 model benefits from the most recent technological innovations in this field:
- The rear view camera with projected path is included as standard, while higher versions are equipped with a wide-angle monitor to display an even wider view of what is going on behind the vehicle.
- The optional digital rear view mirror brings a touch of magic to the driver’s life. Most of the time, it works like an ordinary rear view mirror. But if the rear or loading passengers block the driver’s view, all it takes is a press of a button to bring up an image broadcast by the rear view camera … and remove all obstacles. The digital rear view mirror also includes a HomeLink® transceiver that makes it easy to open garage doors and other compatible devices.
- The optional dive viewing system with perimeter scanning allows you to see everything that is going on around the vehicle, almost as well as with a drone equipped with a camera. This technology displays a 360-degree live view of the immediate environment that allows the driver to see all potential obstacles. It is a very useful accessory for seeing children or small animals near the vehicle. As for the sidewalk view function, it avoids rubbing the pretty 20-inch wheels of the Sienna against the curb.
- The Sienna Platinum 2021 comes standard with a 10-inch color head-up display, controlled by voice recognition and a switch on the steering wheel. The display projects important information, such as speed, navigation directions, and TSS 2.0 suite functions, into the driver’s field of vision.
The perfect hybrid vehicle
The driver of the Sienna 2021 may not even notice the most important technological innovation of this new model: the hybrid powertrain. This is precisely the intention of the engineers. The Toyota II hybrid system develops a total power of 243 horsepower combined with a combined fuel consumption estimated by the manufacturer at 7.1 L / 100 km, a benchmark for the segment, while operating seamlessly.
The accelerations of the Sienna are ultra-soft and almost silent. The two electric motors operating in tandem with the high-efficiency 2.5-liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine deliver particularly vigorous low-speed torque.
The Sienna does not have a plug and the hybrid battery never needs to be recharged. The owner will also not need to spend two or three thousand dollars to install a charger in his garage. The Toyota II hybrid system automatically recharges the hybrid battery while driving.
For many Sienna owners who have been loyal to this model for many years, the 2021 may be their second, third or fourth Sienna. They will appreciate the fact that, like all previous models, the new version is strictly petrol, but more fuel efficient thanks to the energy efficiency of the hybrid system.
The Sienna has some surprises in terms of performance control, however. It offers several driving modes (EV, NORMAL, ECO and SPORT) which allow the driver to personalize his character. NORMAL mode is ideal for everyday driving. SPORT mode increases the power available to improve acceleration. ECO mode optimizes the fuel and battery efficiency. Finally, EV mode allows you to drive at low speed in all-electric mode for short distances.
Using sequential shifting, the driver can “downshift” to stepwise increase the amount of regenerative braking, which promotes greater control when driving on hilly roads, for example, by acting as a low ratio while transmitting more recovered energy to the hybrid battery. As a bonus, the hybrid system increases rolling flexibility by delicately controlling the engine torque to eliminate body roll and diving during acceleration and deceleration.
The Sienna benefits from more than 20 years of global leadership from Toyota in the hybrid vehicle business, in addition to an established reputation for quality, reliability and durability. The powertrain warranty covers all components of the hybrid system for 8 years or 160,000 kilometers and the hybrid battery for 10 years or 240,000 kilometers, whichever comes first.
Car enthusiasts also buy vans. They will be intrigued by the thermal efficiency of 41% of the gasoline engine, one of the highest in the world for an internal combustion passenger vehicle engine (with the exception of other hybrid models from Toyota). The gasoline engine uses an intelligent variable valve timing system with an electric motor (VVT-iE) on the intake camshaft and a VVT-i on the exhaust camshaft. A variable cooling system (electric water pump and electric thermostat) as well as a fully variable oil pump also help to improve efficiency.
Fuel Saving Hybrid The
optional 7-inch color multifunction display built into the instrument panel includes a hybrid system indicator that displays system performance and energy recovery status to encourage fuel efficiency. driver to adopt ecological driving habits. As on other Toyota hybrid models, the screen displays a pointing function inspired by video games and recommendations on optimal acceleration in Eco driving mode.
All-wheel drive on request with electronic control
The Sienna has long offered optional all-wheel drive and the 2021 model is no exception. The Sienna 2021 is the only vehicle in its segment to combine a hybrid powertrain with all-wheel drive, and this system is available on all versions.
The Sienna uses a new kind of all-wheel drive, called electronic on-demand all-wheel drive. Instead of the heavy transfer case and the bulky drive shaft to the rear wheels, this system employs a second independent electric motor which provides instantaneous engine torque to the rear wheels when the driver needs additional traction.
Like the hybrid system, hybrid all-wheel drive works seamlessly and imperceptibly to provide preventive distribution of up to 80% of the driving force to the rear wheels, which helps eliminate front wheel slip when the vehicle sets in motion. Hybrid all-wheel drive also promotes agile cornering behavior by helping to reduce understeer, giving the Sienna driver a feeling of confidence.
The distribution of the engine torque varies according to the conditions, from 100: 0 when driving at constant speed to 20:80 on slippery surfaces, and it is displayed on the multifunction screen.
The Sienna is also made for entertaining
Do you have devices? The Sienna 2021 offers a rich array of connectivity and entertainment including new Toyota audio systems that meet everyone’s needs:
- The Audio System (standard on LE version) includes a 9-inch touchscreen, 6 speakers, AM / FM radio, Android Auto ™ and Apple CarPlay®, 7 USB ports and Bluetooth® wireless technology.
